FAQ

The pricing of automotive catalysts is determined primarily by two key factors: the weight of the catalyst and the quantity of precious metals it contains. However, the stability of these prices is heavily influenced by the fluctuating value of the precious metals themselves, as indicated by the London noble metals market. As a result, the purchase price of automotive catalysts is subject to change in accordance with these market fluctuations.

To facilitate the recycling process, specialized cutting devices are used to separate the ceramic or metallic catalyst from the steel can during the decanting process. The remaining steel is then carefully sorted based on its quality and sold as secondary scrap to steel plants, where it can be utilized in other applications.

The decanted ceramic pieces, which still contain valuable precious metals, undergo further treatment procedures to extract these metals. These extraction processes ensure that the maximum value is recovered from the catalytic converters, allowing for efficient recycling and reutilization of the precious metals.

At Greenmeta, we are well-versed in these intricate processes and employ industry best practices to ensure the responsible recycling of automotive catalysts. Our expertise enables us to extract the precious metals efficiently while adhering to strict environmental standards.

Cars have catalytic converters to reduce the emission of harmful pollutants from the vehicle’s exhaust system. The catalytic converter helps to convert toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and unburned hydrocarbons, into less harmful substances like carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor. This helps to minimize air pollution and promote cleaner and healthier environments.

1. Collection: Used catalytic converters are collected from various sources, including automotive repair shops, scrapyards, and recycling centers.

2. Decanning: The catalytic converter is decanned, which means the outer shell is removed to access the internal catalyst material.

3. Crushing/Shredding: The catalyst material, usually a ceramic or metallic substrate coated with precious metals, is crushed or shredded into smaller pieces to increase surface area.

4. Sampling: A small portion of the crushed catalyst material is taken for sampling and analysis to determine the precious metal content.

5. Smelting/Refining: The crushed catalyst material undergoes smelting or refining processes to separate and recover the precious metals, such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium, from the other components.

6. Purification: The recovered precious metals go through purification processes to remove impurities and obtain high-quality metals.

7. Recycled Material: The purified precious metals are then used for various purposes, including manufacturing new catalytic converters or other applications in industries such as automotive, electronics, and jewelry.
